Rat

We are a small games studio based in Ontario, Canada, with artistic partners in Boston and Texas. Our mission is to build uniquely tantalizing, fun experiences for players to enjoy globally.

It didn't start out like this at first, days of fierce debate were spent between friends and friends of friends over two potential contenders that, as it turns out, had already been taken! So when going back to the drawing board, since we had already been deep into the development of our Virtual Tabletop Eldritch Engine for some time now, the joke of fighting a "Level One Rat" came to fruition. This in tandem with the old proverb "The Moon is made of green cheese", and, well, you get our logo!

Eldritch Engine is our first ever release: A virtual tabletop that we have been working on since 2023, born from the frustration of using web-based offerings. While the competition in the space is crowded, this is just a small step towards a larger future of game development we hope to achieve with the founding of this studio.

Hey, if you're curious about me, online I go by ThatRatDev. Making games has always been a passion of mine, but more core to my ethos has always been the drive to make good software for the benefit of the people. I hope you can support us as we get this new studio off the ground and stick with us through the journey. We here at Level One Rat Entertainment have big plans and even bigger ambitions.

Any world, any system

Got a system your table already loves, or one of your own making? Eldritch Engine makes room for it all. Shape entirely unique character sheets in the Sheet Lab and let the wonders of this eldritch mechanism handle the math as your heroes grow. Playing 5E? The SRD is bound directly into the engine, ready for the first session.

For every keeper of the table, big or small

New to running games? Everything you need is right where you'd expect it. Been at the head of the table for years? You'll find all the control you've been missing. Eldritch Engine was built from the ground up to keep a low skill floor for last-minute preppers and a high skill ceiling for GMs who truly seek to create an experience unlike any other.

What lies in the dark remains unseen

Raise walls, kindle torches and let the shadows fall where they will. With Eldritch Engine's expansive lighting system, each player sees only what the flickering light of their torch can reach, so no secret is spoiled before its time.

An engine for every taste

Skin it, flay it, redraw its very foundations and make it uniquely yours. No longer are players and GMs bound to the same tired interface. Eldritch Engine comes with two unique skins from the very start, each colorable in five different ways.

Free, and bound to you alone

No subscription, and no account but Steam. The core of Eldritch Engine will always be free and rest on your machine. So light the lamps and gather your party. The engine is waiting...
